It's been a while since we had a new album to announce, but rest assured we have plenty lined up for the rest of 2024 and beyond. Here’s the first - a new album by Nightports, teaming up once again with Matthew Bourne.
Dulcitone 1804 is the fourth collaborative album by musician-producers Adam Martin and Mark Slater, following a trilogy of releases with Bourne, Betamax of The Comet Is Coming and double bassist Tom Herbert. This one is centred around recordings of Bourne playing a scarce Victorian instrument called a Dulcitone - specifically instrument number 1804, hence the album title. Recordings of these instruments are rare, and we’re going to go out on a limb and say this is the first album produced entirely on Dulcitone. It’s not often you get to make these bold claims, so you’d better believe we’re going to take it and run with it.
The album came about almost by accident, when Martin and Slater were at Bourne’s studio working on another project and spotted a small, unassuming instrument against the wall. “As Matthew does with all instruments he plays, the first sounds he made with the dulcitone were immediately beautiful,” Martin explains. “Somewhere between a celeste and a piano, it has a clear, bell-like quality that’s evocative of a strange other world. Something old and distant.”

Craven Faults - Thwaite Watermill live release

If you weren't at Studio 9294 on February 22nd to witness Craven Faults conquer all of London, you may not be aware there was a cassette of the Thwaite Watermill live show available at the merch desk. Craven Faults is sneaky like that.
The cassettes are long gone now, but you can download the audio on Bandcamp. Think of the positives - no need to dig out the old Walkman or the C-reg Ford Fiesta Popular Plus. Probably for the best.

MINING - Chimet (digital release)

We're delighted to finally release Chimet, the debut album by MINING, into the world. The vinyl pressing gods have not looked kindly on this incredibly detailed and dynamic album, and so it's taken a little longer than we expected for it to see the light of day. Indeed, the physical release will follow later, but it will be worth the wait. The digital album is out today - we've all waited quite long enough for this one.
This album came to us via Matthew Bourne, as many of the best albums do, and we were immediately drawn into its world. Before we learnt of its data-led start to life, we were struck by its peculiar beauty. There's a certain other-worldliness to it that kept us coming back for more. The fact the music on Chimet charts the progress of two storms over the course of a week, utilising data from a weather station in the Solent, only deepened our intrigue. Who knew data sonification could be so alluring?
It's one of those records that rewards close listening. Music to watch the horizon to.

Digital artist Sock Baeus Redding, in collaboration with graphic designer Oli Bentley, has utilised the storm data to produce an edition of 504 double vinyl LPs, with each record packaged in a unique, digitally printed sleeve, time-stamped to correspond to a specific 20-minute segment of the storm sequence.

Sarathy Korwar - KALAK (Live in Mumbai)

Sarathy Korwar has just dropped a new live recording as a Bandcamp exclusive. KALAK (Live in Mumbai) was recorded at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) on December 9th, and is a document of the lean three-piece core of Sarathy’s band letting loose during their Indian tour late last year. He’s joined by long-time collaborators Tamar Osborn on baritone saxophone and flute, and Alistair MacSween on synthesisers for interpretations of tracks from 2022's KALAK album.
It’s available to download on a pay-what-you-want basis from Bandcamp now.
